Once you booked a day at the spa, you could come in and soak in the hot spring, take a nap on the outdoor lounge chairs, return to the spa, have lunch and snacks at the restaurant and cafes, shop at the gift shop for souvenirs and local food and then enjoy the outdoor footbath as well. Peace and quiet was yours.

Having seen what a real day at the onsen was like, I was adamant to visit another one. Privately renting a hot bath for a few hours seemed like the best option since not many public hot springs are tattoo friendly. That proved quite a challenge because it then looked like a better deal to just book a hotel with a spa included. Finding a hotel that was ok with tattooed guests was another challenge. I decided I would try to avoid crowds and just skillfully maneouver my way around so people would not see and possibly report me.

We found an excellent hotel that was seemingly popular with very nicely sized rooms and great amenities. We were also able to score it at a great price - almost half price - and the hot spring had indoor baths as well as an open air bath.

In terms of getting there, my friend looked into various bullet train options and for the reasonable price of seventeen hundred yen we could cruise to Hakone-Yumoto Station in an hour from Machida Station. We had an early rise as we were heading there for an overnight stay during the weekend. The weather was amazing, the autumn leaves were starting to make their appearance and people were restless. We expected the weekend rush to be crazy.

Although we had headed to Machida Station after we had woken up around seven and had had enough time before the train arrived, an old lady at the ticketing counter kept us back and we lost the booking for our tickets. My friend was luckily able to buy a second set of tickets so we could still get on the train as scheduled.

We still had some spare time after buying the tickets so we went to the bakery station and bought some sweet and savoury snacks for the train ride and as our breakfast. If there is one thing you should do, it is to ride a bullet train. It’s like being on a plane ride but with spacious leg room and magnificent views.
